VIROLOGY QUESTION: You obtain pure Rabies Virus RNA and introduce it into its proper host cell in culture. Do you expect that this will be a productive infection (new virions will be produced)?


I think the answer is no and has to do something with the fact that rhabdoviridae virus genomes are negative-sense single stranded RNA. I recall my professor saying something about how RNA alone doesn't make productive infections because there are no RNA dependent RNA polymerase in cells, but I'm not sure if this is correct or if I'm explaining it correctly. I also don't fully understand what she means by that.
