Paleontologists and some biologists commonly infer function, andeven behavior, from anatomical details. Skeletal features, forexample, are often used to infer that an extinct mammal (such as anearly hominin) was highly, somewhat, or not at all arboreal. Thisinference assumes a good fit of form to function (i.e., optimalform). Can this assumption be justified?
