"What will happen to a red blood cell (RBC), which has an internal ion concentration of about 0.9 percent, if it is placed into a beaker of pure water?"

The answer is: "The cell would swell because the water in the beaker is hypotonic relative to the cytoplasm of the RBC."

My question is, why is this the answer? How do I know that 0.9% ion concentration is hypotonic, and what would the concentration look like if the beaker were hypertonic/isotonic?

You are given a normal sample of muscle tissue which contains many individual cells. The tissue is minced and digested with enzymes to liberate individual muscle cells. You are given a solution of Dextrose in half-normal saline which you are told is hyperosmotic. You place the isolated muscle cells in this solution. Assume all of the solutes inside the cell are not permeable to the cell membrane. What happens to the cells when you place them in this solution and it has reached equilibrium? (Note: You donât know the percentage of the Dextrose in the solution but you do know that itâs a penetrating solute.) (6 Points)
