Document Summary

Ganglia contain clusters of nerve cell bodies and house the cell bodies of afferent and efferent nerves. Lumbar swelling - gives attachment to the nerves which supply the lower limbs. Cervical swelling - corresponds to the attachments of the large nerves which supply the upper limbs. Rootlets -> root: ventral (motor=efferent) and dorsal (sensory) -> dorsal root ganglia (only dorsal side)-> spinal nerve (both) -> ventral ramus (limbs and trunk) and dorsal ramus (back) Dorsal root ganglia: contain the cell bodies of sensory (afferent) neurons. Conus medullaris - tapered lower end of the spinal cord. Cauda equina - bundle of spinal nerves: 2-5l nerves, 1-5 sacral nerve pairs and coccygeal nerve. Filum terminale - proceeds downwards from apex of conus medullaris. Role: to provide longitudinal support to the spinal cord. Continuous with: conus medullaris which is comprised of fibrous tissue. Dura mater: thick fibrous, outermost layer; the space where most of the major vessels lie.
