Can divide eur geographically, in equal parts, by ideology (western vs soviet) Iron curtain divide was relatively accepted but doesn"t make sense geographically. Since fall of ussr/advent of eu, move away from eastern eur and toward. People living in former soviet states esp prefer central. Emerged in 1700s, when centers of learning/culture shifted north. Some trace e/w divide to division of roman emp. Tho this divide doesn"t make sense today (poland etc. are west) Russia not really a part of eur. St. petersburg as a window to the west .
