that we’ve discussed throughout the semester and write a short essay responding to a question. Because of this, you
should complete this homework assignment on your own (not with a group). See below for more guidelines.
Short essay
Using examples from class, write an essay with the following thesis: human languages are complex, rule-governed
systems that embody an innate human capacity for language.
Guidelines:
You must submit this assignment as a PDF document.
Around 2 single-spaced pages, maximum 3 single-spaced pages.
If your choice of formatting (margins,
font size, etc.) give the impression that you are trying to make your essay seem longer than it is, you will be
marked down.
Do not use direct quotations, everything should be in your own words.
You do not need a bibliography. You do not need to cite lecture material. Do not consult sources other than the
course readings. If you want to cite a course reading, in-text parenthetical citation is sufficient e.g., (Bourhis
2012).
Plagiarism and other forms of academic dishonesty will not be tolerated.
