Chapter 1 the study of the person. Psych is bout the precise manipulation of ivs to develop theoretical accounts of specific phenoms (e. g. how many ms it takes to find a circle in field of squares: psychological triad: how people feel, think, and behave. Basic approaches to personality and their focal topics: basic approach (paradigm): systematic, self imposed limitations on the types of observations, patterns, and ways of thinking regarding patterns. Trait approach: looks at ways that people differ psychologically and how these differences may be conceptualized + measured: biological approach: address biological mechanisms (anatomy, physiology, genetics, evolution, psychoanalytic approach: concerned w/ unconscious mind, and the nature + resolution of internal mental conflict, phenomenological approach: focus on people"s conscious experience of world (their phenomenology). Goes in 2 directions: humanistic psychology: pursues how conscious awareness can produce uniquely human attributes (e. g. existential anxiety, creativity, free will, cross-cultural psychology: degree to which psychology + experience of reality differ across cultures.
