Document Summary

Theme 1 applied lecture 2- understanding cystic fibrosis . Cystic fibrosis is an autosomal recessive genetic disease/disorder (requires 2 genes from parents) which causes a thick mucus accumulation in the airways due to an inherited gene from parents. It is the most common fatal genetic disease and effects the digestion and lungs. Proper clearance of mucus (cilia works together with goblet cells to push mucus up and out of the trachea) Thick mucus build up in airways and widening of airway of lungs. Males can be sterile and females can be infertile (reproductive complications) Thickening of airway wall= narrow passage for air to flow through. Good trapping of dust particles that get in our airway. Too much sodium coming into the cell (hyper absorption) A lot of water from airway surface liquid is coming into cells. Height of airway surface liquid is reduced. First link to gene being connected to a disease.
