Doesn"t begin at the start of odysseus" adventures, but in the middle. Poseidon still held angry towards him and wouldn"t let him reach home. Violating the norms of hospitality (xenia) not being disrespectful towards the host (telemachus) Telemachus sees athena (in disguise), and is thinking about his father. He took athena"s hand and welcomed her into their house. When they were inside, a maid brings out a golden pitcher and pours it into a basin for them to wash their hands. Telemachus addresses athena (who is in disguise), and tells him about how he feels about his father (vary saddened and hurt) and believes in his heart that odysseus is not going to return home. Telemachus asks athena who he is and where he comes from (proper questions) Athena lies and says she is mentes, son-of-anchilaus whose father is close to odysseus. Athena tells telemachus that odysseus is still alive.
