According to pimentel, the world population is projected to double in about 58 years. Because of this increase in population, the demand for everyday resources such as food, water, and jobs are needed to maintain a regular day to day life. Population growth is also impeding sustainability because forests are being cleared to replace lost cropland due to soil erosion. These farms are using up an extreme amount of fossil energy for fertilizers, machinery and irrigation. Biologist garrett hardin says that the problem of overpopulation requires a non-technical solution . He says that the population will run out of food and that non-renewable resources will be depleted. Hardin also mentions the tragedy of the commons multiple times in his statements and write-ups. The tragedy of the commons is a problem that happens when people overuse a shared resource so that demand becomes larger than supply and the resource becoming limited or even extinct.
