Objective, physically real, with measurable extent (measuring the square footage with measuring tape) and definable boundaries (walls, ceilings of a room, streets around campus) Key for map-making, description & analysis (explanation) of spatial distributions: relative space. Subjective/perceptual and variable over time (each individual might perceive space differently) Mcmaster campus is huge vs mcmaster campus is tight and crowded . Mcmaster on tuesday was very congested, 2 weeks ago it was not. Mcmaster campus will seem large to first year students, but fourth year students will know shortcuts and will perceive the campus to be smaller. Locations identified by their relative positioning & importance, eg. topological map. In topological maps, scale, distance and positioning are guesstimates.
