November 1, 1986: started with fire in a warehouse storing toxic chemicals. Red dye was stored with chemicals you could track the pollution as the dye flowed downstream. Over 1000 tons of chemicals were stored at the warehouse. Over 30 tons of chemicals entered the river. Romans settled there initially and had a commercial hub since the renaissance. Basel = centre of the swiss chemical and pharma industries. Plays a big role in industry: this causes a lot of pollution for the river. A large industrial area next to the rhine. Novartis complex is now built where the sandoz complex was. Initially there was not a lot of people around here just farmland but rapid industrialization brought many more people. River is very polluted at this point. Only the fishermen cared (pollution hurting fish populations) There was a long history of pollution before accident: people got used to river being polluted.
