Document Summary
Development: changes we undergo between conception to death. Biologically timed cues/changes in human life which include changes within individual guided by genetics ex. first tooth, first step, puberty etc. Maturation is the biological unfolding of changes that are influenced by genetics and the environment. Changes in thoughts and behaviours as a result of our experiences ex. touching a hot stove, looking before crossing the street. Learning is the process of relatively permanent change in our thoughts, behaviours, and feelings as a result of our experiences. Interactionist perspective: believe that most developmental changes are a reflection of both maturation and learning. ex. cannot learn to walk until you are physically mature enough. Measures psychological response (heart beat/breathing) or behavioural response (preference) in infancy: habituation procedure: Determine if infant can distinguish between 2 objects. Present stimuli & measure physiological changes in heart rate/breathing. 1st trial may produce high peak of excitement.
