Bones that protect cns and organs in thoracic cavity. Skull, hyoid bone, vertebrae, ribs, sternum, auditory ossicles. Upper and lower limbs and pelvic and pectoral girdles. Upper and lower limbs and the girdles by which they are attached to the axial skeleton. Upper girdle = shoulder girdle, contains two pairs of bones (scapula and clavicle) Pectoral girdle consists of two bones scapula (shoulder blade, located on posterior side of rib cage, thorax) and clavicle (collar bone, anterior side above first rib) Clavicle articulates medially with the sternum (breastbone) at the sternoclavicular joint. The only bony connection between the pectoral girdle and the axial skeleton. All the rest of bones of pectoral girdle and upper limb are only held in place by ligaments and muscles allows shoulder to have a large range of motion that we normally associate with upper limb. Lateral end of clavicle articulates with scapula on acromion process at the acromioclavicular joint.
