Module 1: Introduction to Histology
Histology is the study of the healthy tissue
Pathology is the study of unhealthy tissue
Major Tissue Components: Cells, Fibers, Matrix (ground substance)
Tissue: A collection of cells that come together collectively to perform a common
function.
Four Basic Tissues in The Human Body
1. Epithelium: creates a barrier, for the external organs
- This is divided into four different groups
- This is due to the way the cells are arranged
Simple: Simplest way of arranging tissues, single layer
Stratified: Arranged in multiple layers
Transitional: When tissues transition between simple and stratified
Germinal: Lines reproductive organs and forms gametes

Simple squamous: Flat, squam shaped, are found in the plasma, usually bound in blood
essels, Boa’s capsule ad etc.
Simple Cuboidal epithelium: As tall as they are wide, nucleus is located in the centre.
This found in plants and ducts of glands, thyroid gland, and ovary surface
Simple Columnar epithelium: These are taller, and nucleus is found at the bottom.
These are also found in stomach, intestine, bronchi, kidney tubules, uterus
This is epithelium which is made up of multiple layers, only lower most layer of the cells
rest near the membrane.
