Chapter 2: the problem-based learning model of nursing education pg. 51-74. Through self-directed learning students identify their own goals and needs, plan strategies to meet those needs and evaluate their progress. Self-directed learning is grounded in humanistic, deterministic, constructivist and transformative philosophies which build upon and complement each other. Humanism views men and women as self-interpreting beings whose goal is to find meaning in their lives through perceptions and experiences. Freedom to determine educational choices and are accountable for the learning that occurs. Determinism emphasizes learner"s responsibilities to the educational process and their ability to use skills of critical evaluation. Constructivist view knowledge as something that learners must construct for themselves in order to understand, predict and control. Individuals acquire meaningful knowledge when they investigate independently. Transformative as learners develop their knowledge and skill base, they are encouraged to explore and use frameworks for learning.
