Injections
Introduction
• Medications that are injected are absorbed quicker than oral medications.
• Usually used he patiets a’t sallo or a’t take oral fluids.
o Subcutaneous Injection
▪ Injection into the tissues under the dermis of the skin.
o Intramuscular Injection
▪ Injection into the body of a muscle.
o Intradermal Injection
▪ Injection into the dermis just under the epidermis.
o Intravenous Injection
▪ Injection into a vein.
Safety Considerations
• Be vigilant during med administration.
o Avoid distractions, receive appropriate medications, know why each medication
is being given, evaluate effectiveness of medications.
• Verify that medications have not expired.
• 2 identifies and use the MAR to check rights.
• Clarify unclear med orders.
• Use aseptic technique during medication preparation and administration.
• Educate patients about each medication.
• Minimize patient discomfort.
o Sharp and shortest length and smallest gauge.
o Change needle if med coats the shaft of the needle.
o Position and flex a patiet’s lis to redue usular tesio.
o Diert patiet’s attetio.
o Use vapocoolant spray or topical medication
o Insert needle at proper angle.

Infection Prevention
Syringes and Needles
• Type of medication
• Volume of solution
• Route of the Injection
• Patients body size
*A syringe consists of a cylindrical barrel, a tip designed to fit the hub of a hypodermic needle,
and a plunger. Syringes are single use, disposable, and either Luer-Lok or non–Luer-Lok. A non–
Luer-Lok syringe uses a needle that slips onto the tip. A Luer-Lok syringe uses a needle that
twists onto the tip and locks into place. The Luer-Lok design prevents the accidental removal of
a needle from the syringe.
