Document Summary

The experience of living with a chronic illness during adolescence: a critical review of the literature. Adolescence is a period of rapid physical, psychological, emotional and social development during which young people develop a sense of an independent identity, focus on peer acceptance, plan for the future and the develop romantic and intimate relationships. Chronic illness can disrupt adolescent development due to repeated hospitalisation, poor health status or changes in appearance. The developmental task of envisioning and planning for the future is also compromised due to the uncertain outcomes for some chronic illnesses. Although it is known that chronic illness can profoundly alter adolescent development, less is known about how young people with this altered developmental trajectory perceive their lives and development. A total of 46 studies was identified. Twelve were adult studies, eight included children and adolescents, three were adult-adolescent studies, two were review articles and one explored the parent experience. The final sample therefore consisted of 20 studies.
