Document Summary
Whenever we state a position, it is relative to some reference point or origin. When discussing the motion of an object over many successive positions during a time interval, we refer to this as trajectory (it is written as x(t), which emphasizes that the position x is a function of time. Displacement of an object is the change in position. Remember, distance is a scalar, while displacement is a vector. Distance also measures the total length of the trajectory. It doesn"t matter how you got from start to nish, displacement only depends on the starting and ending positions. We de ne velocity as the rate of change of an object"s displacement. The slope of a position vs. time graph is velocity. The sign of the velocity vector is the same as the displacement vector, meaning that velocity has direction. Speed is the rate of change of an object"s distance.
