Milgram"s experiment involved teaching a subject to use shock punishment for learning. During the set-up, the learner casually mentions that he has a heart condition which raises your concerns, but the experimenter assures him that the shocks would do no permanent damage. Teachers must give progressively higher shocks for incorrect responses from learners. The teacher is told to continue giving shocks, even when the learner is clearly in pain. Results showed that most (around 65%) subjects continue giving shocks until the end of the experiment. In milgram"s original experiment, it was found that most civilians will obey orders given to them, even if it means that harm will be inflicted on innocent people. People display strong obedience, even to minimally powerful figures of authority. We are terrible judges at predicting our own behaviour. The prestige of an institution influences the level of obedience in subjects. 65% at yale vs. 50% in the middle of nowhere.
