If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it still make a sound. The auditory system translates sound waves into audition. Falling tree does produce sound waves: auditory system can translate sound waves from vibrating objects into an experience of audition. Trees make sound waves, but auditory systems make audition. Tree does make a sound wave: but the sound waves themselves do not make sound, unless an auditory system can translate those waves into the experience of audition. Unit 2 - the auditory mechanisms of different species. These mechanisms vary in different species according to their needs: whether they need to communicate over long distances, or whether they need to receive high or low frequency sounds.
