If a tree falls in the forest and no one is around to hear it, does it still make a sound. The auditory system translates sound waves into audition. Falling tree does produce sound waves: auditory system can translate sound waves from vibrating objects into an experience of audition. Trees make sound waves, but auditory systems make audition. Tree does make a sound wave: but the sound waves themselves do not make sound, unless an auditory system can translate those waves into the experience of audition. Unit 2 - the auditory mechanisms of different species. These mechanisms vary in different species according to their needs: whether they need to communicate over long distances, or whether they need to receive high or low frequency sounds. Species vary in the range of frequencies they can detect. But it is within the range of the dog"s auditory system. We can perceive sounds between 20 and 20,000 hz.
