Introduction
Defining and identifying abnormality
You think of children with autism.
Deviant from the norm they have a hard time functioning in certain environments.
There are many different ways to defining.
Behavioral disturbance, a child with a serious phobia.
There could be emotional disorders, they are extremely anxious, they cannot function well.
There are psychological deficits, kids with lower IQ have a hard time processing information.
Mental illness, kids who are depressed are also abnormalities.
Psychopathologies, kids who exhibit these behaviors that we see in adults.
Maladaptive behaviors, kids who are unable to adhere to a routine, or are so routine
dependent, this is like kids with autism.
There are development disorders like down syndrome, cognitive delays.
We are talking about a variety of manifestations of abnormal behavior.
How do we think of abnormal behavior in different contexts.
Through testing and context, you may understand their disability more.
Diagnostic systems
Different ways to define abnormal behavior.
Psychologist will use a system called the DSM-5.
This is a living document, it helps classify all the different abnormal deviant behaviors.
It’s a itte document but there are always changes and updates.
They use experts in the field to create the document.
They come together and debate what the correct classification for each disorder.
There are many ways to define these behaviors so it takes very long to make and decide.
They are just guidelines, there is no perfect criteria every case is different.
We have to use clinical judgement, the dsm is just a guideline.
What is abnormal
The dsm gives guidelines to determine the extremes of these behaviors.
You look at the factors to identify the standout behaviors.
It also help identify abnormal behavior when it is subtle.
These subtle things that you might notice are helped by the dsm.

You have to look at the context, how old, where are there.
When we talk about abnormal behavior there are many things to look at.
Defining and identifying abnormality
Is it truly abnormal behavior and how deviant is it.
You need to looks at developmental norms.
Cultural norms are important to look at, they define whether it is abnormal or normal.
Gender norms and expectations are important too.
Situational norms are important.
The role of adults in the child's life is important to look at, their responsibility in identifying
abnormal behavior and seeking help.
Changing views of abnormality.
Harmful and atypical behaviors
In the dsm when you look at a disorder it says something that is clinically significant.
There are specific sign or patterns you might see.
They have to caused distress or impairment.
Increased death pain disability or loss of freedom.
Behaviors that are developmentally appropriate
We use developmental norms to identify abnormal development.
You deviate from the norm when you are outside the average.
There is a sequence for development.
If kids do not follow normal sequences then there is cause for concern.
There are also norms for physical skills, language, cognition, emotion.
Other signs
Developmental delay, are they talking.
You need to look at other signs, do they understanding.
Developmental regression, have they lost a behavior.
True regression is when they mastered the behavior then the spontaneously lost it without
reason.
Extremely high or low frequency of behavior.
High or low intensity of behavior, how strong is it.
