5 month old babies use spatial location, not appearance shape or colour, to define an object. If buried item is dug up from a different location (close or far) --> infant is surprised. If different object is dug up at the exact burial location --> infant is not surprised. Reach for attractive toy closest to them = before 6 months. Ability to continuously keep track of one"s location relative to the starting point and thus return directly to it. Then kids were led to a different location taking an indirect route with no landmarks. Child"s return to toy was better than chance = dead reckoning. More frequent correct object search if allowed to move on their own (not carried) Infants use the geometry of a room, not colour. 18 - 24 months use geometric cues, not featural cues. Search correct corner 50% of the time and when wrong search opposite corner.
