Lecture 1
A brief Introduction
Figure out tutorial schedule, you will be attending once every three weeks.
Go onto the school website and fid the syllabus.
This course is about understanding social work from a Canadian perspective.
Read and understand the syllabus in order to find the readings.
There will be two take home assignments, they are worth 30 percent.
There are two self directed assignment assignments.
There are two exams and the final percentage of our mark is for participation.
Social work is about dealing with individuals and helping solve issues that not only have
to do with the singular person but also the surrounding issues attributing to their
problems.

What is social welfare?
Social services- provision of personal and community services to help people improve

Incoming security- employments insurance, social assistance, old age security, workers,
compensation (benefits to supplements income or maintain income levels)
In Canada- we have a welfare state, meaning we have a system where the state protects
the health and well-being of its citizens, particularly those in social or financial need.
We have social policies and social programs to administer these things, these are the
rules and regulations that form the network of social welfare.
Social Policies and Social Programs
Social policies- overall rules and regulations, laws and other administrative directives
that form the framework for the social welfare activity.
Social programs- specific initiatives that implement social welfare polices.
Social welfare safety net allows these systems to be administered to other people.

Public welfare- Canada is a federal state and public welfare occurs at three levels:
federal (national) government, provincial and territorial governments, ad regional or
municipal governments.
Private welfare- 2 types, no profit and profit organizations.

It is a helping profession, grew out of a desire to help people who could not help
themselves.
In the last hundred years, it has become more political.
Before they were looking to diagnose a personal problem, we have a evolved to modern
social work.
Case study
A single parent, with 3 children, was fired, he is now applying for unemployment
insurance.
His 3 children are always late for school and they come without a lunch.
The teacher noticed the father smells like alcohol hen he picks up his kids.
