Sociology: Textbook- Sociology is the systematic study of human behaviour in a social
context.
Teacher’s Defi- Connecting our ideas, feelings, behaviours, experiences, and
relationships to our wider society (both local and global contexts, past and present.) it is
a way of understanding and contextualizing ones personal experiences. Sociologists
use divergent theories and qualitative and quantitative methods to try to understand
society.
Social Problems: is a social condition (such as poverty) or a pattern of behaviour (such
as violence against women) that people believe warrants public concern and collective
action to bring about change. Defined as social problems when they systematically
disadvantage or harm a significant number of people.
Social Problems we will examine:
= Challenges faced by Canadians who provide care to children and other family
members including aging parents and
ill,
injured, disabled, and dying family members.
- Challenges faced by Canadian workers including temporary migrant (foreign) workers
including precarious employment and discrimination.
= Immigration policy and challenges faced by newcomers and transnational families
= Canadian criminal music system: overrepresentation of marginalized groups
Social Policy Examples:
= Family Policy (Parental leave, Childcare, Economic)
= Labour Market (Employment Insurance, Canada Pension Plan, Minimum wage)
The Law Examples:
= Family Law: legislation surrounding economic support of spouses and children, (child
& spousal support)
