What is social welfare?
Social services – provision of personal and
community services to help people improve their
well-being (i.e. child care, child protection services,
women‘s shelters, counseling etc..)
Income security – monetary support to individuals or
families, i.e., transfers - benefits to supplement income or
maintain income levels
4 types: social insurance, minimum income,
demogrants, income supplementation
employment insurance, social assistance, old age
security, workers‘ compensation
In Canada – we have a WELFARE STATE – meaning
we have a system where the state protects the
health and well-being of its citizens – particularly
those in social or financial need
