Course description from the ryerson university undergraduate calendar: From memory to conversations to scripted stories, narrative is a profound part of the human experience. This course examines how stories are told through different media and across different technological platforms. We explore how contemporary writers, theorists, artists and media-makers come to terms with narrative in the digital era, as new technologies impact how we communicate and create new narrative forms that transcend traditional media boundaries. This class will be comprised of lectures, screenings and media demos, and group presentations. By the end of this course, students will: Have a working knowledge of narrative structure and script analysis. Have an understanding of literature and archetypal narrative. Develop a practical understanding of the evolving nature of content, creator and audience relationships around media content in the 21st century, as it impacts narrative. Develop the vocabulary and analytical capacity to engage critically in media analysis and creation.
