Indian act, residential schools and canadian colonialism: the indian. April 12, 1876 the canadian government introduce the act. Treated indigenous people like children who needed to be managed, control and eventually assimilate. Not passed with the consent of the indigenous people, simply imposed by the government. Government attempted to: de ne who they were, undermine their economy and society, assimilate them, and wipe out their languages, involuntary sterilization of indigenous youth, destroy systems of governance, culture and families. Canada 150 was not celebrated by all . Canada"s past and present has be founded in colonialism. Indian act is still in place - the government does not consult with indigenous peoples on things that will a ect them. Government still ghts residential school survivors in court. Standards of living and indigenous peoples are given less money for health care. More children are in state custody than were ever in residential schools and treaties are still ignored.
