Proboscis- elongated appendages emanating from an animal"s head (butterfly nectar sucker). Esophagus: passes through the thorax and into the abdomen. Once in the abdomen the gut expands largely. The gut is divided into the 3 segments: foregut, midgut, hindgut. Cardiac valves are found between the foregut and the midgut. Pyloric valves are found between the midgut and hindgut. Breakdown of proteins to peptides, not amino acids. Foregut- has an extensive part that can extrude and forms a type of syringe. Mouth parts can be bent down and below the belly. Mouth parts dictate the food being ingested and therefore gut architecture. Exterior mouthparts are made of exoskeleton and very robust. 2 broad categories of mouthparts: biting mouth parts, sucking mouth parts: may have associated pumps to allow suction. Both are located in the most rostral foregut. Mouth parts are fused from pairs into a single structure.
