Civil war, segregation era or jim crow ( the name of the racial caste system) era , Blackface minstrelsy: white people painting their face as black people, racial stereotyping, disguising slavery as not a big deal . Black in blackface: resistance from african americans, plot wy to freedom via music, and were able to convey a resistance to other aftican american people. 1910-30 the great migrations, african americans moved from rural south to urban north. 1890s, vaudeville and theatre producers consolidated offices in nyc. Vaudeville and broadway shows relied on tin pan alley songwriters. (brief piano intro, short vamp leading into the verse, 2 or more verses, a chorus with first and second endings ) Primary modes of dissemination: sheet music, live performance, collaboration among musicians etc. One of the greatest songwriters in american history.
