Phillipe aries started the study of death from a historical perspective. There are 4 themes: awareness of the individual, the defense of society against untamed nature, the belief in an afterlife, belief in the existence of evil. Ritualization a way of protecting society from nature and gods caused death to be dealt with regularly. Into the christian era death became more of a concern because people became more aware of themselves as individuals and their own life . Life was improving and the hour of death became the most important hour of life. Face and body were covered in burial practices and death was no longer a natural part of life. Then death became a fear ex. fear of being buried alive. Then death became more personal as families became more important than society. Also viewed death differently stopped believing in hell and eternal suffering. Death meant reunion with loved ones in heaven.
