Biopharmaceutics: study of the properties of therapeutic substances and their dosages/bioactivity relationship relationship. Therapeutic substances: prescription drugs: small molecules (under 500 amu), peptides and proteins (ex. insulin), vaccines (and conjugates, natural health products (nhps): vitamins, plant extracts- not well regulated. Some can interfere with other drugs: diagnostics: pill with camera that replaces traditional endoscopies. Pharmaceutical sciences: interdisciplinary areas of research involved with the design, synthesis, mode/action, delivery and use of drugs. Purpose: supply materials + techniques that deliver what people desire most (good health). Mental health, cholesterol and hypertension lowering drugs are very profitable. Something that you would need to take for long periods of time- good profit for companies. Average life span in early 1900s: 50 years. Workplace infrastructure: education, safer work environments, standards. The irony is that healthcare spending by governments does not correlate. Not much difference between nations even though they spend different amounts.
