Conceptual definition: the theoretical meaning of the underlying concept. Operational definition: the precise set of operations and procedures used to measure the variable o o. Parameter: descriptive index for population (ie. average daily caloric intake of all 10 year olds in ny) Statistic: a descriptive index for a sample (ie. average daily caloric intake of 300 10 year olds in 3 ny schools) Frequency distribution: arrangement of data values, with a count of how many times each value occurred in a dataset (can be table or graph), can be used for any measurement level. Elements: data values, absolute frequencies (count), relative frequencies (percentage), cumulative relative frequencies. Bar graphs: used for nominal (+ many ordinal) level variable (bars do not touch each other) Horizontal dimension specifies categories (ie data values) Vertical dimension specifies either frequencies or percentages.
