Document Summary

A disorder is some kind of impairment or distress that causes an atypical behaviour or response according to cultural standards. Disorders encompass abnormalities, or violations of typical standards and behaviours. However, these abnormalities are culture and era specific because there are great differences in typical behaviour across time and cultures. Disorders also usually bring impairment to daily function, as well as a level of distress. Impairment is also dependent on context, because certain situations that are impaired may only occur in certain places; arachnophobia is irrelevant in urban canadian cities. Furthermore, distress is key to disorders, but very subjective and poses risk to over-pathologize normal circumstances. Finally, disorders bring dysfunction: what is a scientist practitioner, and what is their significance. They read and review scientific literature so that they can develop and practice methods that are up-to-date, relevant, and backed by proven research. They are also evaluators of science, determining if their own practice is sufficient.
