Symptoms: - intense emotional upset (acute anxiety, anger and grief) Heat in chest that rises to the head. Dissociative experiences (depolarization , derealization, and amnesia) Suicidal gestures in some cases but not in others. General feature: sense of being out of control. Attacks occur as a direct result of a stressful event relating to the family (death in family, conflict with spouse or children etc. ) For few the attacks are not related to a stressful event but to accumulated experience of chronic suffering. No relationship has been found with ataque, however several disorders (panic disorder) overlap with ataque de nervios. Ataque is associated with suicidal ideation, disability and outpatient psychiatric utilization after adjustment for psychiatric diagnosis, traumatic exposure etc. Some ataques represent acute distress without clinical sequelae, may also be used to indicate an episode of loss of control in response to an intense stressor. Related conditions in other cultures: indisposition in haiti and blacking out in the us.
