Document Summary

Chem quiz 1 review chp 2 & 3 and related lectures. John dalton who first recognized that chemical compounds were collections of atoms but he could not determine the structure of atoms or their means for binding with each other. First important experiments were done by j. j thomson (1856- 1940), who studied electrical discharges in partially evacuated tubes called cathode rays tubes. Thomson postulated that the ray that was produced by the cathode tube (cathode ray) was a stream of negatively charged particles now called electrons. Thomson"s plum pudding model: called that because electrons are like raisins dispersed in a pudding (the + charged cloud), as in plum pudding. In 1909 robert milikan performed very clever experiments involving charged oil drops. These allowed him to determine the magnitude of the electron charge. With this value and the charge-to-mass ratio determined by thomson, millikan was able to calculate the mass of the elec as 9. 11 x 10-31kg.
