Document Summary

A variety of day-to-day problems require the use of visual imagery. Paivio"s dual-coding theory suggests that there are 2 ways of representing events (verbal and non-verbal) Logogens: the units containing the information underlying our use of a word (components of verbal) Imagens: the units containing the information that generate mental images (components of non-verbal) The two systems use referential connections while encoding information. However, the info in each system are encoded differently. Concreteness: the degree to which a word refers to something that can be experienced by senses. Correlated with imagery (may represent the same process) Imagery: the ease with which something (like a word) can elicit a mental image. Paivio conducted a study where 4 groups learned 16 word pairs. The pairs varied in concrete or abstract pairs (ex concrete-concrete, concrete- abstract etc. ) The participants were expected to generate a second word pair when cued.
