PSYB57H3 Study Guide - Midterm Guide: Stroop Effect, Speech Shadowing, Nystagmus
Document Summary
Biological explanations for antisocial behaviour involve twin and adoption studies. Evolutionary principles study the environment (esp the ancestral environment) that shapes our biology. Dichotic listening is when a participant is exposed to two messages simultaneously and asked to answer a question posed in one of the messages. Participants who knew which message had the question performed well (good selective attention) The cocktail party phenomenon is when you are able to selectively attend to one conversation in a crowded room with other on-going conversations. A shadowing task is when participants are given two messages simultaneously and are asked to repeat one of them. Early info-processing theories suggest that we filter out unattended information. Neisser and becklen found the visual analogue of dichotic listening, selective looking. Both dichotic listening and selective looking are consistent with early selection view of attention. Attention can prevent early perceptual processing of irrelevant distractors. However, other tasks are consistent with late selection view of attention.
