SOCA02H3 Final: Living through our children Notes
Document Summary
Living through our children: exploring the education and career. Choices" of racialized immigrant youth in canada notes. Our thematic analysis of data explores the diversity of families" immigration experiences, labor market challenges for parents, shared family discourses of sacrifice and opportunity, and differences in youth responses to the high expectations of parents. We conclude that the life course transitions experienced by parents have important con- sequences for their children; immigrant youth feel a strong sense of intergenera- tional obligation, and this obligation is problematic for a significant minority of youth. Research on youthadult transitions has been critiqued for its normative assumptions. For example, the pattern of young people moving in a linear way from dependence toward independence and individual autonomy may describe white middle-class families more than others. Interestingly, a similar critique has also been made about the school-to-work transition policy literature his paper responds to the call to broaden our thinking about youth transitions.
