The giant incontinence was once an example of the inverse care law: the more common a condition the less attn. is given to it. Incontinence is the involuntary and inappropriate passage of urine and/or feces. Incontinence results from impaired fxn of bladder and bowel and/or extrinsic factor: disturbance of urinary tract (infection, anal weakness, outlet obstruction, impaired mobility and dexterity, constipation, hypnotic drugs, brain failure, adverse physical or psychological envs. Ppl w/ brain failure can voluntarily pass urine into flower pot or against wall thinking this is normal. Intrinsic factor of incontinence is destabilization of mechanism of bladder emptying which results from physiological and pathological changes in kidney and bladder fxn. Extrinsic factors include: quality and quantity of urine, state of bowel, mobility, dexterity, state of alertness, intellectual status, emotional status, physical and psychological envs. Healthy normal bladder secretes 100ml urine per hour (less at night) 1st stage: 300 ml (3 hrs after fluid intake)
