Instead of a desire for suicide to end her misery, the main character (rye) feels hope, protection, attachment, and love. She felt sick to her stomach with hatred, frustration, and jealousy (519). Butler"s story recounts how the apocalyptic plague reduces all people to their naked impulses and animalistic drives, suggesting that the carefully constructed veneer of civilization that modern societies possess is tentative at best.
