What were the most important factors that caused the collapse of the soviet union and its empire in. The communists were increasing losing their hold on the soviet government. In june 1989, the communists lost all but one of the districts in which seats were contested to representatives of the dissident solidarity movement. Citizens were fleeing, specifically citizens of east berlin to the west via hungary. Eventually, the berlin wall opened up and it was clear that communism was a lost cause. A few months later, belgium, czechoslovakia, and poland chose to flee from the soviet empire out of free of communism. Gorbachev insisted to keep things civil, avoiding violence when the former states began to break off. Former soviet communist leaders were outraged, believing that in order to maintain the grasp and control they had on the states they must ensue violence and war.
