One studying method is to think about the course in a "grid" -- put the "time periods" across the top of a (real or imagined) sheet. Put major themes down the left hand side. Thus you could work "down" an era to answer a time period question or "across" the eras to answer a theme question. In more general terms, don"t get too bogged down on the micro-detail. As with the end-of-class questions, the exam is mainly about taking an issue or question, taking a stance and supporting that view with a little bit of historical support.
