The white, middle class is known for being very discrete when talking about sex however, they were fascinated with all things sex and talked quiet a bit about it. A sign of affluence and something to be proud of: women and children were designated to the private sphere of the home, unpaid work. Women"s anatomy and reproductive organs makes them weak. It helped them conform to the cult of true womanhood, it helped her stay a virgin and to find a husband. It allowed them to elude sex, it was an effective method of birth control (children were an economic liability) their husbands would go to prostitutes for sexual acts. It told women that society didn"t care about their sexuality and their sexual needs. It gave men permission to use mistresses and prostitutes this gave them the opportunity to bring back sexual diseases.
