The dominant characteristic that all alcoholics share is that they already have a problem with drinking in social situations or in their everyday lives. They may need to have a drink before have a conversation etc etc. Drinking becomes a way to dealing with stress and anxiety - an act of routine. Symptomatic drinking: pattern of alcohol consumption aimed at reducing a negative mood state - depression, anxiety etc. You"re accidentally getting highly intoxicated more often and experiencing more blackouts. Not all alcoholics consume alcohol in the same pattern. Chronic alcohol intake has the same effects as a depressant. Thoughts of serious suicide and serious depression usually happen when someone has had a lot to drink. 40% alcoholic dependents will have at least 1 episode of depression.
