Gender is one of the most basic of status characteristics. Gender role: a set of norms or culturally defined expectations, that define how people of one gender ought to behave. Stereotype: a rigid set of beliefs about a group of people that distinguishes them from others and is applied to all members of that group: children have these as young as 6. Heterosexuality is an important part of gender roles. Schema is the set of ideas we associate with males and females and helps us process information tends to dichotomise info based on gender. Makes us uncomfortable if inconsistent hard to change notions because we filter out things that contradict them. Our own gender roles and the situation we are in affect how likely we are to process information in terms of gender schema. Scripts: cognitive frameworks for how people are expected to behave in social situations. Heterosexual script is the traditional sexual script (tss) in north america.
