OT is the art and science of enabling engagement in everyday living, through occupation
of enabling people to perform the occupations that foster health and well-being and of
enabling a just and inclusive society so that all people may participate to their potential
in daily occupations of life
► Occupation: it is MORE than just a chosen career; it refers to everything that
people do during the course of the everyday life; many of us have various
occupations that are essential to our health and well-being
OTs use systematic approach based on evidence & professional reason to enable
individuals, families, groups, communities, organizations, or populations to develop the
means and opportunities to identify and engage in the occupations of life
• Evidence & professional reasoning are important terms; you need to have
evidence based background to justify what you are doing
• Professional reasoning (clinical reasoning) what we do with the information
and putting it together in order to fulfill the needs of the clients
• It is a collaborative process that involves assessing, planning, implementing,
monitoring, modifying and evaluating the client
➢ This is in relation to occupational engagement in self-care, work, study,
volunteerism and leisure
➢ OTs use enablement skills such as: adaptation, advocacy, coaching,
collaboration, consultation, coordination, designing/building, educating,
engaging and specializing to ENABLE OCCUPATION
• OTs may take on different roles:
o This could be advising on health risks in the workplace, safe driving for
older adults (emerging roles), or programs to promote mental health for
youth
o Many also perform functions as managers, researchers, program
developers, educators, and practice scholars; this is in addition to the
direct delivery of professional services
➢ Professional Directory Model: classic clinic settings where the OTs
are working with the clients
