Does not refer to individuals, a way of ranking large groups of ppl into hierarchy that show their relative privileges. The definition is a system in which ppl are divided into layers according to their relative power, property and prestige. 4 major systems: slavery, caste, clan and class. Israelites of old testament had slaves & ancient african. Least common among nomads (hunter & gathers), most common in agricultural. Debt: the person who could not pay back the other person was now their slave. Violation of law: instead of being killed, a murderer may be slaved by a family of victim for compensation. War and conquest: when one group conquered another, it was often convenient to enslave at least some of the vanquished.
