Haptophytes: haptophytes are a group that have structures that a are sometimes hairy. What"s going on is that you have a standard eukaryotic structure. Have a flagella coming out but then you have the haptoneme. One of the things that scientists suggest the haptoneme does is that it tends to swim forward [oar like swimming]. The haptophyte swims forward whilst the haptoneme stretches out and can see it touching other cells. Could be associated with sensing of other cells in the area but the actual mechanism is unknown in present time: there is another structure present known as the coccolithophorid [round stone]. Carbon deposition and they settle to the bottom of the ocean.
