All organisms composed of one or more cell. Cells are the smallest unit of life. Metabolic processes (energy production) occurs in cell. Goals: passing on genetic info, making replicas: less dna = less time to replicate. Must replicate the dna (in form of chromosome: happens in s phase, organelles need to replicate too, remember that cells need to stay a constant shape (can"t just keep shrinking) Helps prepare the cell for actual cell division. Lots of checks in cell to make sure everything is present and correct. G2 finishes cell growth and makes sure all components needed are there. M chromosomes segregation in anaphase, cell division occurs (~ 1 hour) 2 phases: mitosis phase, cytokinesis phase. S phase is very important, ensures you don"t pass on bad mutations. G1 is the point of no return once you finish g1, cell division has to occur even if you take away all signals.
